As part of the 100 Things I Love series, here are 10 famous lines from books or movies that I love.
- “E.T. phone home.” from the movie, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, who doesn’t remember that one, or hear it. I’ve been known to text that to my kids now and then as a reminder that mama does enjoy hearing from her babies now and then, even if those babies are now 22 and 28 years old.
- “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.” Spoken by Rhett Butler, to his then wife, Scarlet O’Hara Butler, in the movie, Gone With The Wind, it is a favorite of mine. Well the whole movie is actually a favorite of mine, as is the book. Any feature about strong women who challenge the status quo and move through life to their own drummer, living outside of the box and coloring outside of the lines, is my kinda lady!
- “They didn’t agree on much, in fact they rarely agreed on everything. The fought all the time, and they challenged each other everday, but despite their differences. They had one important thing in common they were crazy about each other.” From the movie, The Notebook, based on the book by Nicolas Sparks.
- “So it’s not gonna be easy. It’s going to be really hard; we’re gonna have to work at this everyday, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, forever, everyday. You and me… everyday.” From the book, The Notebook, by Nicolas Sparks. It is my dream to find a guy that truly feels this way, and won’t ever give up on us. Okay I might have found him, in fact I am pretty certain that I did. And that is all I’m going to say about that for now.
- “I’ll have what she’s having.” from the movie, When Harry Met Sally. One of my all time favorite movies!!!
- “Houston, we have a problem.” from the movie, Apollo 13. Probably spoken by just about all of us at one time or another.
- “She’s safe, just like I promised. She’s all set to marry Norrington, just like she promised. And you get to die for her, just like you promised. So we’re all men of our word really… except for, of course, Elizabeth, who is in fact, a woman.” Captain Jack Sparrow from the movie, Pirates of The Caribbean. LOVE the movie! The following sequels didn’t do a thing for me though.
- “They’re here!” from the movie, Poltergeist.

Why he ever started this cheap, penny-ante Building and Loan, I’ll never know. Isn’t that right, Uncle Billy? He didn’t save enough money to send Harry away to college, let alone me. But he did help a few people get out of your slums, Mr. Potter, and what’s wrong with that? Why… here, you’re all businessmen here. Doesn’t it make them better citizens? Doesn’t it make them better customers? You… you said… what’d you say a minute ago? They had to wait and save their money before they even ought to think of a decent home. Wait? Wait for what? Until their children grow up and leave them? Until they’re so old and broken down that they… Do you know how long it takes a working man to save $5,000? Just remember this, Mr. Potter, that this rabble you’re talking about… they do most of the working and paying and living and dying in this community. Well, is it too much to have them work and pay and live and die in a couple of decent rooms and a bath? Anyway, my father didn’t think so. People were human beings to him. But to you, a warped, frustrated old man, they’re cattle. Well in my book, my father died a much richer man than you’ll ever be!” From the movie, It’s A Wonderful Life, which is a holiday tradition for me to watch on Christmas Eve. I LOVE this movie!
